Part Time Jobs That Pay More Than Minimum Wage

You might be working a part-time job to keep you afloat, but many jobs of this sort don’t exactly pay a whole lot; yes, minimum wage goes up all the time, but what if you want money for a little something extra that won’t go toward living expenses? Or what if you’d like to make a wage closer to that of full time without working full time at your current job? There’s a few ways to supplement your part time salary in your favor, and it may not even involve putting on a goofy uniform and pretending to be happy about everything.

The best way to make some extra money without being under The Man’s thumb is to be self-employed. The downside of this is that there are no health or insurance benefits unless you buy them yourself… unless maybe you have a split personality and your alternate self is an insurance salesperson. But self employment has several other professional benefits, such as naming your own hours, freedom of choice as far as clothing (usually), setting your own salary, and sometimes even not even having to leave home! Below are some examples of ways to be your own boss and make a little extra cash:

• Etsy. Are you artistically inclined in any way? If you paint, draw, sew, knit, make jewelry, blow glass, sculpt, build, or screen print, you can sell your wares on Etsy.com at your own asking price.

• Tutoring. Let’s face it…teenagers are getting progressively dumber, dropping out in larger numbers, and are even struggling to get their GEDs. Offer your services as a tutor, especially if you happen to be proficient in math or English (and heaven knows, teens do not speak human English). Some parents are willing to pay anything to see their child graduate, but others may expect you to turn their child into a cancer curer for nothing more than the distinct privilege of working with said child. But you’ll run into bad customers no matter where you work, so parents aren’t an exception.

• Lessons. If you know anything about sports, music, or art, tout yourself as a trainer of said practices. Just about every school has a parent who wants their kid to play the piano or learn how to paint.

• Computer repair. Everybody’s got a computer now, and since most people don’t know what they’re doing when they use them or the internet, most people have their computers break down due to erasing things they shouldn’t, having a hard drive overloaded with viruses, or somebody thinking it’d be fun to put bologna in the disk drive. Whether they bring their mangled computer right to you; or try to fix it themselves first, worsen the damage and then bring it in, computer repair is a service that is always needed.

• Caregiving. Become an aide to someone who needs one (like an elderly person, someone who is physically handicapped, etc.). For helping out your fellow man, you can make upwards of ten bucks an hour easily.

• Salesperson. You could sell Avon at crazy o’clock on Sunday morning at people’s doors, but why not try selling stuff on eBay? It’s not exactly a “job”, but if you find stuff that could be considered collectible, it can sell for a high price. Food and items that bear vague resemblance to Jesus and the Virgin Mary are especially popular on eBay and devout followers will gladly pay several thousand dollars for a waffle with a burned edge that looks kinda sorta like Jesus.

• Housekeeper/maid. Getting paid to clean up someone else’s messes is the story of the lives of many employees worldwide who don’t even work in a house. But there is money in going to someone’s home and doing their chores; not a lot, unfortunately: $300 a week is pretty normal for a housekeeper. It’s extra money, though, yeah?

If you need more information on any of these things, check out your local newspaper, CraigsList, eBay, and Etsy.com. Extra money awaits you!
