Realistic Vending Goals

A lot of people get into the vending business thinking that it’s a pretty easy business to start. I mean, who doesn’t love the dream of quitting their day job and telling the boss to take a hike? Well, the reality is that vending is not a scam, but it’s not that easy either. It’s just any other type of small business that you set up on your own. There are a couple things that vending has in its favor that other small business don’t such as the ability to start small and expand, plus potentially lower start up costs. But these very things that make vending so attractive are the very same things that will cause most people to never be successful in vending.

Let’s take the ability to start small and expand as exhibit A. Because most people are doing vending part time, they pursue it more like a hobby rather than a business. When you start out small, say 10-30 vending machines, you will also be making very little money. Most of your machines will make you only $7 – $20 per month.  National studies put the per head average at $7. This means that a double head machine will get you a grand total of $14 per month. This is gross, not net. You still need to take out product costs, gas, plus business insurance and accounting software which I would definitely recommend.

A lot of people have a hard time sustaining motivation when they’re working hard and only pocketing $100 – $200 dollars a month. This is why I think it’s important to do a hard initial fast push when you first start out in vending. When you first start in vending, you are excited about the opportunity, the business and the potential, so you need to get this all working in your favor. My personal experience is that if you can get your business making in the $400 + profit range, this now becomes REAL money. This amount of money is a car payment or your electric bill.

You need to get your vending route to a point that it’s producing enough money to dramatically improve the quality of your life. You need to capitalize on your fresh enthusiasm so that your vending business doesn’t just stagnate. For a lot of people, vending becomes a hobby that eventually gets dropped; most people have a hard time staying focused on long term goals and will give up well before they reach the finish line.
