They say that everyone has a book in them, waiting to be published. Well, why wait for a publisher? Why not publish your own e-book? It doesn’t have to be a bestseller to make you some money. As long as you can provide information of value to readers, you can make a profit with an e-book.
One of the great things about e-books is that they cut out the middle man, i.e. the publisher. So you can publish direct to your readers. Another advantage of going down the e-book route is that you don’t need to have a list of writing credits as long as your arm to get face time in front of a publisher. Because the publisher is you!
And you can be very niche-specific with an e-book. It’s not taking up space on a bookstore shelf, so you can be much more narrow in your focus. Typically, e-books are often written in a more casual, conversational way than their printed counterparts. This is because people who buy and download e-books are not looking for some massive literary masterpiece, they just want something that will give them the specific information they are looking for. Mostly, they are looking for answers. So if you can give them those answers, you’re “quids in”.
It’s a good feeling to get paid to write. And anyone can do it. You don’t need a degree, you don’t need to be the ultimate expert on a particular topic, you just need to know more about that topic than your readers do. And it’s amazing how much research you can do online.
Be careful though that you don’t plagiarise. Never cut and paste content from the web directly into your e-book. Write in your own words, using your own “voice” and you can’t go wrong. The more you write, the better you’ll get. And it could provide you with a nice little side income.
