Social Media Marketing – My Thoughts

I gotta tell ya; I am a blogger first, and a marketer second, and because of that, I look at this entire social media rules thing in a different light than others do. You see, I think most have it all out of whack, but I intend to set that straight here.

First off, the ultimate goal is to make some money. I think that a lot of bloggers or so-called “social media experts” are missing this point. For me, I am not out to make a bunch of friends unless there is some profit involved. Some of you may see that as selfish, but to me it is just business. As an online marketer and social media consultant company, you have to be flexible.

With this idea in mind, you need always to start a social media campaign in the right direction, and that being targeted followers and friends. It isn’t just about “going out and gaining Twitter followers” as most bloggers think. If you do that you will be “looking” popular, but so what? If your followers are not engaged and buying from you, what does it matter? For me, un-targeted followers mean nothing.

It is the same when you consult brick and mortar businesses on the net. If you are not looking at the bottom line, or ROI (return on investment) then you are wasting your client’s money.

Finally, and most importantly, marketing is not always about “me.” I have found that targeted followers and friends will come only after you have promoted them. That is a good thing, as long as your ultimate goal is to make some money.

Is this a selfish approach? I don’t think so. Please leave comments below and tell me what you think. Social media is still a newer idea and the opinions surrounding it are many. What do you think guys?
