Keys to Abundance

End of the hundred challenge

As I mentioned in a previous post, I was working on a challenge for August to write a hundred articles on Triond. Although I was delayed for a while by a slight misunderstanding regarding whether images had to be sourced for all new articles on the writing site, I decided to continue by working on both Triond and Hubpages.

Hubpages led me to some pretty interesting internet marketing sites, and has prompted me to also spend some time working on niche blogs. (More about this in a later post.)

Unfortunately, I made a disheartening discovery once I began to connect the internet marketing skills with my article challenge; I wrote an article as an experiment to see the effects of good SEO practice and backlinking. When I started analysing my traffic stats and search engine rankings for this article, I found out that the entire article had been lifted and posted elsewhere on the internet. I don’t care too much about the copyright infringement, nor the lost income (through leaking of traffic to the other site). What annoyed me was that it screwed up my backlinking experiment – duplicate content can be treated quite harshly by Google, so the result I got couldn’t really be trusted.

My advice to you if you are writing content on the internet, and depend solely on it for income, check out a site called Copyscape. If you put your article url into it, it’ll seek out exact copies elsewhere. As copyright owner though, it’ll then be upto you to decide what (if anything) to do about it.

In my case, I simply requested my article be removed from the other site, and will probably stop writing on Triond. I’ll work on my backlinking to articles already posted there, but mainly concentrate on my niche sites for a few months instead. The good news is that the efforts to double my Triond article count produced a four-fold increase (to date) in income from there. And that shows good keyword choice and SEO helps an awful lot, despite the fact I haven’t yet paid enough attention to getting inbound links. That’ll come over time, with more work on my part.
