Selecting Foods for your Grand Opening Ceremony

If there’s anything people like to do when attending any sort of social function, it’s eating. In some cases, the food options are limited. If you are at a party hosted by your son’s hockey team, for instance, don’t expect to be served caviar or salmon – you’ll need to settle for pizza. It can be safely said that a certain type of food is expected for any sort of specific event. When it comes to a grand opening ceremony, it can be a challenge trying to determine what to serve your prospective customers – let alone getting other tasks completed like finding oversized grand opening scissors and whatnot. On the one hand, you don’t want to seem pretentious by serving your guests expensive hors doeuvres followed by a lobster dinner. This might be appropriate for the grand opening of an upscale restaurant, but in other cases it seems a bit over the top. On the flip side, you don’t want to tarnish your image with the community by limiting the options to pizza and soda. It sounds like somewhat of an adolescent choice for a menu. The main point is that you want to strike a fine balance when choosing what to serve potential patrons. To do so, we need to establish some rules.

Some of us like overly spicy foods, while others prefer very bitter concoctions. Regardless, at your event you should avoid either of these two extremes. You don’t want guests rushing about the perimeter of the building looking for water because they indulged in the wrong type of food. It makes the event look like a circus and reflects poorly on you for having chosen such ill-suited foods. Instead, stick to the basics. Serve vegetables and meats that aren’t heavily seasoned. Provide guests various dressings like barbecue sauce and ketchup so they can prepare the foods as they like. Be sure to have plenty of salt and pepper handy as well. The bottom line is not to impose your tastes on guests – give them the building blocks and let them tailor them to their own tastes. You can impose your own tastes elsewhere, like when you pick up a pair of big ceremonial scissors for the ribbon cutting ceremony.

A big portion of your grand opening ceremony budget will be appropriated towards food. Instead of hiring a fancy catering service, consider buying meal platters from wholesale stores like Costco. These platters might come with sandwich meats like salami and ham, or vegetables like celery and carrots. Either way, they provide some nice variety and will allow your guests to sample a bunch of different things.

When it comes to dessert, don’t try to get very elaborate – you may end up digging yourself a hole. Ice cream may sound like a good idea on a hot summer’s day, but without the proper refrigeration equipment, it can make a mess very quickly. Smoothies might be a better choice and can be equally refreshing. Pastries are a good idea as are other dry forms of desserts.
